Isaiah 26 - Perfect Peace in a Troubled World

 

God offers stability, peace, and ultimate victory to those who trust Him, even in a world marked by judgment and uncertainty.

Isaiah 26 continues the prophetic vision that began in chapter 24. While chapter 24 emphasizes global judgment, chapter 26 shifts to something remarkable: A song of faith from God’s people in the midst of that judgment.

1 In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.

3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

4 Trust ye in the Lord forever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

5 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

6 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the Lord.

11 Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.

12 Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

13 O Lord our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.

14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

15 Thou hast increased the nation, O Lord, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.

16 Lord, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

17 Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O Lord.

18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.

19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be over past.

21 For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

 

 Isaiah 26:1 “In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah. “This is not a song after everything is fixed. It is a song in the middle of uncertainty.  God’s people can have peace, even when the world is unstable.

I. A SONG OF SALVATION (Isaiah 26:1–6)

Isaiah 26:1 “We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.”

1. God is our true security.

Not walls, not governments, not systems. Salvation itself becomes our defense. Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

2. The gates are open to the righteous.

 Isaiah 26:2 “Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation may enter in.”

Entry is not based on status, but on faithfulness and truth.

3. Pride leads to downfall.

Isaiah 26:5“For he bringeth down them that dwell on high…”

God humbles the proud, and He exalts the humble.

 James 4:6 “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

People today put their security in the economy, government systems, retirement plans, and technology. Isaiah reminds us: Only God is a secure foundation.

II. THE SECRET OF PERFECT PEACE (Isaiah 26:3–4)

 Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.”

 

1.  Peace is not circumstantial; it is relational. It is not based on what is happening around you; it is based on who you are trusting.
2. “Stayed” means fixed, anchored, unwavering. A disciplined focus on God.
3. Trust is the key to peace.

Isaiah 26:4 “Trust ye in the LORD forever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.”

We live in an age of anxiety, overstimulation, and constant bad news. People are mentally exhausted. The issue is not just what we are facing; it is what our minds are fixed on.

III. THE RIGHTEOUS VS. THE WICKED (Isaiah 26:7–11)

 Isaiah 26:7 “The way of the just is uprightness…”

 1. God directs the path of the righteous.

Their steps are ordered. Psalm 37:23“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD.”

2. The wicked refuse to learn, even in judgment.

Isaiah 26:10“…yet will he not learn righteousness…” Judgment does not always produce repentance.

3. Spiritual blindness is real.

People can see consequences… but not connect them to sin

We see this today: Crisis happens, yet hearts remain unchanged. Warning signs appear,  yet people continue in sin. The problem is not lack of evidence; it's hardness of heart.

IV. WAITING ON THE LORD (Isaiah 26:8–15)

Isaiah 26:8 “we have waited for thee.”

1. Waiting is an act of faith.

Trusting in God’s timing. Lamentations 3:25 “The LORD is good unto them that wait for him.”

2. God’s people desire Him, not just His blessings.

Isaiah 26:9 “With my soul have I desired thee in the night.”

3. God brings increase and restoration.

Isaiah 26:15 “Thou hast increased the nation.”

We live in a culture that hates waiting: we want instant results, immediate answers, quick fixes. But God often works through process and patience.

V. RESURRECTION HOPE & FINAL VICTORY (Isaiah 26:16–21)

 Isaiah 26:19 “Thy dead men shall live,  awake and sing.”

1. Suffering drives people to seek God.

 Isaiah 26:16 "in trouble have they visited thee.”

2. Human effort cannot produce salvation

Isaiah 26:18 "we have not wrought any deliverance.”

Salvation is God’s work

3. Resurrection is promised.

One of the clearest Old Testament references to resurrection.

 1 Corinthians 15:52 “the dead shall be raised incorruptible”

4. God will judge the earth.

 Isaiah 26:21 “the LORD cometh out of his place to punish.”

This world is not the end. Death is not final. Injustice will not go unanswered. God will make all things right.
